The Program

Universidad ORT Uruguay, established in 1942, is the first and largest private university in Uruguay, welcoming over 11,000 students.

Students will take classes at the ORT-Pocitos Campus, a newer, more modern, green space. Optional internships ranging from 1-3 credits are also available to students with a high level of Spanish. There are internships available for students with lower levels of Spanish, however options are more limited. ORT offers many activities for its students. In the Fall, students will take a field trip to Sierra de Minas and Colonia, as well as optional tours to Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls. In the Spring, field trips will include Punta del Este and Rocha. Optional tours will be to Buenos Aires and Colonia. There is also a Buddy Program, where students can be paired with local students in order to better understand the language and culture of Montevideo. More activities include indoor soccer, cinema day with local students, and beach activities once a week.

Montevideo

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, known for its very calm, laid-back atmosphere and lifestyle. In the midst of an economic boom, Uruguay has begun to attract more visitors, residents, and students from across the world. In terms of quality of life, Uruguay ranks among the highest in Latin America, even being named "Country of the Year" in 2013 by The Economist for its social development, inclusion, and tolerance. More specifically, Montevideo has also been often ranked as having the highest quality of life of any city in Latin America. The city gives students a unique opportunity to not only study, but explore the Río de la Plata region of Uruguay and Argentina, absorbing the Spanish, African, and Italian cultural influences. Montevideo's cultural scene sets it apart as well, with music, art, and theater in abundance. In terms of public transportation, Montevideo has an extensive bus service that covers much of the city. Its location also makes traveling to nearby places such as Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Brazil very convenient. There are further opportunities for day trips and cultural excursions made possible through ORT Montevideo as well. Montevideo is known for its beautiful mix of modern and colonial-era architecture and landmarks, from the Plaza de la Independencia, to the Palacio Salvo, to the Solis Theatre. One cannot stay in Montevideo without visiting the beach; the city's coastline is home to many popular beaches such as Playa des los Pocitos and La Rambla.

Housing and Meals

The housing for this program is a Homestay:

Homestays
Staying with a host family is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the culture and language. Your family will welcome you into their home and provide breakfast and dinner daily. The families are located within a 20 to 30-minute commute to the university and are located along different traditional neighborhoods of Montevideo that have plenty of cafeterías, parks and plazas. Host families will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. We recommend this option if your priority is to learn the language as quickly as possible.

For more information about housing, please refer to the USAC Housing website.
