International Faculty and Scholar Services

Welcome to International Faculty and Scholar Services (IFSS) at Rutgers University. Whether you are a member of the university administration, faculty or an international scholar or spouse, you will find comprehensive information and helpful guidance on these pages.

Rutgers is proud to host more than 1,500 international scholars (visiting researchers, professors, and lecturers) and their family members each year, representing nearly 100 countries. They are engaged in research and teaching activities in 150 departments, laboratories, centers, institutes and programs universitywide. We recognize that international faculty and scholars play a powerful role in shaping our community, and we value them deeply.

The Rutgers Global staff is familiar with the challenges of living, studying and working in a different country. Our mission is to provide quality advising services and to offer supportive programming to visiting scholars, faculty and staff in J-1, H-1B, O-1 and other employment-based visas during their time at the university.

The Rutgers Global IFSS office strives to ease the transition of foreign nationals into the campus community. We conduct welcome orientations to incoming international visiting scholars and their dependents, as well as workshops to incoming international faculty members and staff. We provide resources, information, and programming on a wide range of family, work, cultural exchange, visa, and travel topics relevant to the international scholar population. During fall and spring semesters, we hold numerous trainings on hiring foreign nationals, visa processing, and academic appointments for department, institute and center administrators. Our office also engages in advocacy efforts to protect international educational exchange, prevent burdensome federal regulations, and clarify and improve related procedures.
