The Program

Take intensive Chinese language courses for five weeks at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan.

Supplement your language learning with a course in Chinese Calligraphy and conduct guided research in an area of Chinese Studies.

National Tsing Hua University is a research university located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Hsinchu is popularly nicknamed "The Windy City" for its windy climate and "The Garden City of Culture and Technology" by its tourism department.

Academics

Students will enroll in 6 credits and may enroll in up to three courses, up to 9 credits from the following list. 

  • Chinese Language (Required for all students): Beginners, Intermediate, or Advanced, pending placement at the start of the program (4 credits)
  • Chinese Calligraphy (Required for all students). (2 credits)
  • Guided Research in China elective (3 credits)

Students have the option of taking 6 or 9 credits. 

Classes are taught by experienced professional Chinese language teachers from the National Tsing Hua University.  Language classes meet five times a week. Calligraphy classes meet two days a week (total of 8 classes). The Guided Research in China course meets weekly at specially arranged times.  Regular attendance is expected. It is not possible to take classes not-for-credit, nor is it possible to take classes as Pass/Fail.

Language Pledge
The goal of the Intensive Mandarin in Taiwan program is to immerse students in the Chinese language.  For this reason, you will be asked to pledge to speak only Chinese during the entire length of the program.

Excursions
The program itinerary includes group excursions, designed to enhance student learning about  history, culture, and contemporary society in Taiwan and China. 

Itinerary

Saturday July 6; Students depart the US on self-arranged flights

Sunday July 7: Students arrive at NTHU, dorm check-in and campus orientation

Monday July 8: Placement & Registration

Tuesday July 9: Classes begin

(Tentative) Saturday July 13: Day-trip to Taipei

(Tentative) Saturday July 20: Walking excursion to Hengshan Township

(Tentative) Saturday July 27: Day-trip to Taichung

(Tentative) August 9-11: Optional self-paid group excursion to historical and scenic sites in southern Taiwan

Tuesday August 13: Last day of classes and program conclusion

Thursday August 14: Students depart Taiwan

 

Note: Other afternoon, evening, and weekend walking tours may be arranged as circumstances allow. Announcements about these will be made after arrival in Taiwan.

Housing and Meals

Students will share double rooms in the residence hall of National Tsing Hua University. There are food courts and restaurants on campus. Students are responsible for all their own meals. Daily meals in Taiwan is about $30 USD.

Scholarships

Available to all Rutgers students participating in a Rutgers Global–Study Abroad program. Applications can be found inside of your study abroad program application. For more information, please visit the Scholarship section of our website.

Available to study abroad students who receive a Pell Grant.  For more information about the scholarship and additional eligibility requirements please visit the Gilman website.

Rutgers Global – Global Initiatives Study Abroad Scholarship will be given on a competitive basis to qualified students whose financial needs are not being met by other funding. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the overall strength of the application (especially the cover letter), academic record, and financial need. The award can be used to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare.

Upon returning to Rutgers, Scholars are expected to promote study abroad through classroom presentations, study abroad fairs, or information sessions.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures is pleased to announce the availability of five scholarships to support students participating in the summer study abroad program in Taiwan in 2024. Each scholarship recipient will be awarded $500.

The scholarship is open to all undergraduate students at Rutgers University. Applicants should submit a short essay between 150-200 words, describing their educational goals for the summer program and, more broadly, the role that Chinese language could play in their future educational or career goals. 

Please send the application essay to: chair@alc.rutgers.edu, with the subject line “Taiwan Study Abroad Scholarship.” The decision will be made in early March 2024.

Lihui Zhu

Ms. Zhu, Lihui (Zhu Laoshi)  has been teaching Chinese in the Rutgers Department of Asian Languages and Cultures since 2001. She has also directed the summer program in Beijing.

She is experienced in leading our Chinese language study abroad programs and maintains close contact with National Tsing Hua University in organizing and administering the program.
