Rutgers STEM Research Sponsorship Program

Rutgers STEM Research Sponsorship Program

A J-1 Early Career STEM Research Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is pleased to announce its participation in the U.S. Department of State’s BridgeUSA J-1 Early Career STEM Research Initiative. This initiative was launched by the U.S. Department of State to further educational and cultural exchange in the U.S. through partnerships between private host organizations and U.S. universities. To support that mission, Rutgers now sponsors eligible early career researchers for J-1 visas who will conduct STEM research and engage in cultural exchange at suitable third-party STEM host organizations.

Traditionally, the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program has been used by Rutgers to bring scholars from other countries to conduct research at Rutgers. Through this new program, Rutgers will facilitate the sponsorship of eligible J-1 Exchange Visitors at qualifying third-party STEM host organizations.

Examples of possible sponsorship opportunities include:
  • Private organizations with existing STEM research collaborations with Rutgers seeking to enhance those partnerships through the sponsorship of recent Rutgers graduates
  • Companies in the local tristate area seeking to support the development of early career STEM researchers and benefit from their unique global perspectives
  • Start-up companies seeking to build their global profile by supporting international exchange in STEM research

Please note that the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program (EVP) is not a typical work visa program. While J-1 Exchange Visitors may participate in work-based salaried research collaborations and training, the core purpose of the program is to promote and facilitate the exchange of ideas, research, research techniques and practices, as well as linkages between the U.S. and other countries and foster global understanding.

More information is available at the BridgeUSA website.

Benefits of the Initiative for Employers:
  • Gain a competitive advantage in the global economy: International researchers bring unique perspectives and skillsets that will help you promote innovation within your organization.
  • Build diversified research teams: International researchers will add to the diversity of your organization through their unique backgrounds.
  • Gain access to new visa sponsorship opportunities: Private companies can tap into the J-1 Exchange Visitor via program and benefit from this efficient visa category.
