Rutgers Global – GAIA Grant Helps Launch Online Dance Certificate, dancers in silhouette
Friday, December 9th

The Department of Dance at Mason Gross School of the Arts recently unveiled its new international dance studies online certificate program, featuring five elective courses each focusing on a different world region. Dance studies professor, Jeff Friedman, Ph.D., coordinated the program over a period of three years, with the aid of an "Internationalizing the Curriculum" GAIA Grant.

"These are a variety of rigorous academic courses in dance studies, placing dance practices in their social, cultural, political and sometimes religious contexts. They are nearly all at the introductory 100 entry-level. About three years ago, I took the intersection of both sets and generated a plan for the International Dance Studies Online Certificate, with support from the GAIA Grants," Friedman said.

The online certificate program will provide students with an ability to "critically analyze dance practices from an array of global-local cultural contexts," he said. Currently, the program includes five courses, with a planned expansion to eight courses over the next few years. For the most recent course description, click here.
