Academics

The Universidad de Deusto (Deusto) was founded in 1886 as Spain’s first private university.  Courses are available in both English and Spanish and, while you will likely take courses with international students, there is also the option to enroll in courses with locals. Classes are available through the Computer Science, Engineering, Business, & Spanish language track in the fields of business, engineering, computer science, global studies, psychology, Basque studies and Spanish language and culture. Deusto is fully accredited and recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia).  In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the ISA Bilbao website.

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to ISA  and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take at least 12 credits while abroad. The credit translation system between ISA and Rutgers University is 1:1 meaning a 3-credit course at ISA will also be a 3 credit course on your Rutgers University transcript. You will receive 3-4 credits per class taken with ISA.  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.

Living in a homestay allows you the opportunity to experience aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor.  A homestay is a great way to better you linguistic and cultural immersion during your time abroad. Each host family has been carefully selected by ISA’s resident staff in order to best accommodate your needs and to ensure a comfortable living situation.  You will typically share a room with another ISA student of the same gender. Single rooms may be available for an additional fee. Placements are located throughout the city center however homestays near the beach (20 minutes outside the city center by metro) may be available upon request.  Homestays provide three meals a day and laundry service once a week.
