Prague
Its innumerable characteristic steeples have earned this UNESCO World Heritage site the nickname, “Hundred-Towered City.” Find out why it’s a perfect example of the steady development of a society transitioning from a communist past. With a population of only 1.3 million, Prague has an unusually rich cultural life, including festivals, operas, concerts, and cultural programs that students can experience like native Praguers. Once you are in Prague, it will not take you too long to understand why it is considered one of the best cities in Europe!
Academics
You will be able to choose one three-credit course per session, studying the diverse psychological aspects of Prague’s rich heritage. Courses are taught by specialists in their respective fields from Charles University and other reputable universities. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings. You may add an optional one-credit “survival” Czech language course. To view the current courses available, visit the CIEE website.
The CIEE Prague Study Center is located in Vyšehrad, at the top of one of Prague’s highest hills, in a beautiful park-like setting about 15 minutes from the Old Town area. It features classrooms, a library, student lounge, staff offices, café, and a large garden and patio area.
Excursions
With CIEE and your peers you will visit sites of historical and cultural importance in Prague, past excursions have included: a day trip to Terezín (Theresienstadt) – former Jewish ghetto and Nazi concentration camp, visit to Sychrov – a beautiful Neo-Gothic castle, and Karlštejn – the famous gothic fortress built by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, or travel to Karlovy Vary, Plzeň and/or Jáchymov on an overnight trip!
