"From Zion Shall Go Forth the Law: The Unknown History of Jews and Human Rights"

James Loeffler
Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History, University of Virginia

Few today are aware of the significant connections between Zionism and the origins of international human rights. Yet the creation of the State of Israel and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights not only share a birthday, but also remain intimately intertwined in current debates about global anti-Semitism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and American foreign policy. Professor James Loeffler, Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History at the University of Virginia, will draw on his recent award-winning book Rooted Cosmopolitans: Jews and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century to discuss both the forgotten historical connections, and the lessons going forward in approaching the interconnected futures of global justice and Jewish politics.
