Submission Details

Visit https://go.rutgers.edu/rutgersgottalent during the entry period (see below) and follow the instructions to complete and submit an entry form.  Entrants must upload one video that demonstrates their talent.

All talents are welcome including, but not limited to, a musical performance, spoken word/poetry reading, art work, dance routine, comedy act, magic tricks…

Solo acts and duets/group performances are both permitted.

All submissions must be original. Students are permitted to cover another artist’s piece but they must properly cite the artist and body of work in their video.

Your file should be named as follows: [your last name], [your first name], NameOfPerformance

Video submissions must be no longer than five (5) minutes in length.  There is no minimum length but entrants are encouraged to submit a video longer than two (2) minutes to properly demonstrate their talent.

Submitted videos should be a final product.  Videos will not be edited in any way by Rutgers Global; they must be ready to be shown to an audience before uploading to the entry form.  See Tips for Successful Video Creations below for ideas.

The performer(s) in the video must show their face(s) at least once during the video.

Videos containing languages other than English should contain subtitles in English in their final product.

Students are permitted to submit up to two performances, but the talent displayed must be different in nature (e.g. Students cannot submit two different singing performances or two different dance routines) and entrants will only be eligible to be selected for one performance as a semi-finalist for the entire contest.  Separate entries are required for each submission.

Videos must be recent recordings – created within the past 12 months is acceptable.

Entry Period

The competition entry period begins on Thursday, March 10,2022, and ends on Monday, April 10, 2022, at 11:59PM EST.  Winners will be announced during the Rutgers Got Talent! showcase event on Tuesday, April 26, 2022.

Tips for Successful Video Creations

  • Practice, practice, practice before recording.
  • Check your audio quality to be sure you can be heard at your best.
  • Be sure that the camera lens is clean before you record
  • Perform to the camera as is appropriate for your work
  • Film from eye level or higher.
  • Pick an area that is calm and free of distraction.
  • What’s in your background? Be sure you have “set the stage” in a way you want the viewers to see.
  • Try different lighting to see what might work best.
  • Don’t forget to silence your phone, especially if you are using it to record!
  • What are you wearing? Be sure you are comfortable but that you are presenting yourself in an intentional way.
  • Background noise – think about the time of day when you record. Is there traffic, trains, or roosters crowing?
  • Try a few takes before you listen back to see which is the best.
  • Check the options for video and audio recording with whatever you do – some settings are better for music versus spoken word!
  • Have a friend give a listen and a preview – you’re creating something new so share it and see if they notice anything you may want to correct or rerecord.
  • Check that the file works before submitting it.

Eligibility

The contest is open only to current undergraduate, graduate, and professional students of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick, Newark, Camden, and RBHS).  All contest entrants and winners will be required to confirm their student status.  If more than one person is featured, all performers must be current Rutgers students.

Selection Process, Prizes, and Notification

All submissions will be viewed by a panel of judges comprised of Rutgers Got Talent! organizers.  Semi-finalists will be determined and notified by e-mail prior to the Showcase event on Tuesday, April 26th.  These semifinalists will have their videos shown during the showcase event - semifinalists can opt to perform their act live, where possible, during the Showcase.

Voting will be conducted by all those in attendance to determine the winners.  Semifinalists are asked to be present during the showcase.  Attendance is not a requirement to win but, as voting will be live during the showcase, it is in the best interest of the entrants to attend.

The creator of the top video/first place will be awarded a $200 gift card to a retailer of their choosing (based on availability).  Second place will be awarded a $100 gift card to a retailer of their choosing (based on availability).  Third place will be awarded a $75 gift card to a retailer of their choosing (based on availability).
