Rutgers Awards for Excellence in Global Engagement

The Rutgers Awards for Excellence in Global Engagement recognize and celebrate faculty, staff, students, and alumni for their outstanding contributions to global engagement. The Awards recognize achievement in the following categories: i) Global Education, ii) International Programs, iii) Global DEI, iv) International Collaborations and Partnerships, and v) Global and Cross-cultural Competencies.

Each year, one award will be given to:
•    a faculty member
•    a staff member
•    a student (individual or group)
•    an alumnus 

The awards will be given at a ceremony to take place during International Education Week in mid-November

The faculty and staff award recipients will receive a plaque and $1,000 to support their professional development endeavors. The individual student recipient will receive a plaque and a $500 term bill credit, and a student organization recipient will receive a plaque and $1,000. The alumni recipient will receive a plaque and a travel allowance up to $1,000 to fully or partially cover the cost of travel to Rutgers to attend the award ceremony.

The Rutgers Awards for Excellence in Global Engagement celebrate the global engagement and outstanding work of select members of the university, and we hope they also serve to inspire other members of Rutgers community to become globally engaged. 

Nomination Process
To submit a nomination, nominators will need to submit a short form (link below) asking for nominees’ information, sustained commitment and dedication to international education, and specific accomplishments relevant to the awards.
Nominators for all award categories must be a current or former faculty, staff, student, or an alumnus or alumna of Rutgers University. Self-nominations will not be considered. 

Deadline: Nominations are due on September 11, 2023.

Review Process
Rutgers Global will form selection committee(s) to evaluate nominations based on the impact of their work.  The selection committee(s) will have diverse representation from the university community (e.g., faculty, staff, and students). Notifications to award recipients will be sent on October 9, 2023.

Eligibility Requirements

Faculty Award +

Nominees must have demonstrated excellence in leadership and support for international education, global teaching and learning, service to the international community, global partnerships, and/or conduct research with a significant international component and impact. Ideal nominees should have accomplished the following, but not limited to: 1) lead student mobility programs (e.g., study abroad, international internship, international research, etc.); 2) offer international learning opportunities; 3) advance global partnerships; 4) lead high impact global research; 4) support the international student and scholar community; 5) internationalize the curriculum through global teaching and experiential learning; and/or 6) built institutional capacity at home or abroad through their leadership capacities. 

Nominees must be current full-time or part-time faculty at Rutgers (i.e., tenure track, NTT, and PTLs) or emeriti faculty and must have been at Rutgers for at least five years. A major part of their international contributions included in the nomination must be in association with Rutgers or have occurred during their employment at Rutgers.

Staff Award +

Nominees must have demonstrated excellence in advancing global understanding, fostering global diversity, equity, and inclusion, supporting and inspiring the international community on and off-campus, and promoting global engagement at Rutgers through innovative and creative initiatives, practices, and partnerships. Successful nominees have developed multicultural campus activities, offered programming that supports the international community, and/or promoted global teaching and experiential learning at home and abroad. 

Nominees must be current full-time or part-time administrative staff at Rutgers and must have been at Rutgers for at least five years. A major part of their international contributions included in the nomination must be in association with Rutgers or have occurred during their employment at Rutgers.

Student Award +

Nominees must have demonstrated a commitment to international education and global and cross-cultural understanding at Rutgers. In addition, nominees must have demonstrated their commitment to the values of a Scarlet Knight (i.e., authentic, inclusive, responsible, resilient, and engaged).  Successful nominees must have been actively involved in programs and activities at home and/or abroad that contribute to fostering global competencies and leadership. Some examples of activities are following: 

•    Promote and/or contribute to international engagement and understanding, including community service opportunities
•    Foster collaboration and conversations between people and groups from different international backgrounds
•    Use their own international education experiences to empower their peers to enrich their global perspectives and pursue international learning opportunities
•    Lend a voice to or otherwise assists an underrepresented population
•    Celebrate and/or promote different cultures, identities, and international perspectives

Nominees must be current, full-time undergraduate, graduate, or professional students in good academic standing from any discipline from all four chancellor-led units (i.e., Camden, Newark, New Brunswick, and RBHS).  For student organization nominees, the organization must be active and formally registered within the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership

Alumni Award +

Nominees must be Rutgers graduates, former students, or former scholars who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to global education, advancement, peace, or justice. Nominees must have been instrumental in advancing Rutgers’ reputation globally as a recognized global leader. Distinguished accomplishments may include helping to solve a global problem, advancing global justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, promoting international learning and engagement, supporting the professional development of young people, achieving success in industry or innovation, or in other ways bringing distinction to themselves and Rutgers.
