This course explores the cultural dimensions of political violence and genocide and focuses loosely on perpetrator motivation. Topics include the cultural, socioeconomic, and historical origins of political violence in countries such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Nazi Germany, Guatemala, Sri Lanka, India, and the former Yugoslavia, and the conceptual meanings of terms like "violence" and "genocide" and the aftermaths of mass violence and terror.
