Who are sponsored students? Sponsored visitors are those who come to Rutgers Sponsored visitors on a visa sponsored by an organization other than Rutgers and are usually on a J-1 student visa.
Rutgers provides support to both sponsoring agencies as well as sponsored students and scholars to help them reach their goals. We are committed to serving as the liaison between sponsoring organizations, students, and scholars, and various academic departments and other offices on campus. The list of sponsored programs Rutgers hosts changes every semester. The Fulbright Student program is one such example.

Transferring-in to Rutgers:
If your visa sponsorship is ending but you require more time to complete your studies, you may be able to transfer your visa sponsorship to Rutgers. This is a process known as transferring in. Your host department must agree to this process and you must show sufficient financial support before Rutgers will agree to transfer in your SEVIS record.
To transfer in, you will need to complete some information online and upload some documents. You can access the transfer in page through the R Global portal and follow the steps below:
-
Inform your current sponsor that you will need to transfer your visa sponsorship to Rutgers
- Submit the Academic Information e-form and the Financial Information e-form (available only after your Academic Information e-form has been submitted by you and your academic official)
- If your current sponsor provided you with a document that needs to be signed by your International Student Adviser, you can upload it in in this step.
- If your current sponsor asked for a letter from our office stating that Rutgers will accept sponsorship of your visa and SEVIS record, you can request it at this step.
- Submit the SEVIS Transfer e-form.
