The Program
Welcome to Uruguay!
This program focuses on Spanish Language, Latin American studies, gender and business. Explore the rich culture and contributions of the area known as the Rio de la Plata, which is the river and estuary that forms a border between Argentina and Uruguay.

The program is based in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and a port city with a massive coastal promenade where locals enjoy strolling, exercising, and socializing. Known for its vibrant, laid-back lifestyle, the host city also offers a robust music, theater, and arts scene where many performances are held at Teatro Solis, Montevideo's renowned theatre built in 1856 or at the public festivals held at parks, plazas or La Rambla. USAC chose to locate the program in Uruguay due to its safety, political, financial, and economic stability.
Academics
You may take three to seven credits. At least one 3-credit course is required. Course availability is contingent upon student enrollment and is subject to change. To learn what classes are available click here.
Classes are offered in English and Spanish. For courses that say they are taught in Spanish and English, they are introductory level courses where students can practice Spanish language skills while still taking a course taught primarily in English.
The Universidad ORT is an international non-denominational university. It is the first and largest private university in Uruguay. It has an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and the main lines of the university are technology, business and design. Every year, more than 11,000 students study at ORT, including international students from Spain, Mexico, Germany, the U.S. and China. The University has received some international accreditation by AMBA and the ARCU-SUR Mercosur system. The university engages in applied research and has created links with other local or foreign universities, as well as, research centers and industry.
ORT University has two campuses, one in downtown (ORT-Centro) and one in Pocitos (ORT-Pocitos). The USAC program resides on ORT’s Pocitos campus in a good location of the city. There are many cafeterias, restaurants, and stores in the are. It is also easy to navigate the city by bus and will take you less than 20 minutes to get ORT-Pocitos from all USAC housing locations.
Optional Tour from May 22-27. Students have the option to begin the program a week early and participate in the weeklong tour of Buenos Aires and Colonia. This option has an additional cost that can be paid directly to USAC. They would arrive in Montevideo May 21 and move into housing earlier.
Housing and Meals
Homestays (included in program price)
Staying with a host family is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the culture and language. Your family will welcome you into their home and provide you with a single room, breakfast and dinner daily, also a weekly laundry is included. The families are located within a 20 to 30-minute commute to the university and are located along different traditional neighborhoods of Montevideo that have plenty of cafeterías, parks and plazas. Host families will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. We recommend this option if your priority is to learn the language as quickly as possible.
Student is responsible for $250 refundable deposit.
Residence Hall ($263 surcharge)
The residence hall is only fifteen minutes away from the university by bus. It is a private residence hall with good security and very nice apartments. Apartments will be shared with other USAC students and local students will be also living in the residence. The apartments have two single rooms for two students, and includes a microwave, fridge and electric kitchen. Each apartment have a shared bathroom and also includes Wi-Fi internet.
Student is responsible for $250 refundable deposit and $250 surcharge for this option.

The above costs are estimations and represent the known out-of-pocket costs students encounter during their time abroad.
Some of these expenses will be paid for prior to going abroad, such as an airline ticket, while some of these expenses, such as meals and personal expenses, will be paid in-country as part of your daily expenses. As you plan, you will need to budget these costs and spend wisely throughout your time abroad.
