Congratulations to Mohini Mukherjee, Executive Director of International Student Services at Rutgers Global, who has been selected as one of sixty-four higher education leaders from across the country to participate in the prestigious HERS Leadership Institute (2023-2024).

The HERS Leadership Institute (HLI), a key program of Higher Education Resource Services (HERS), is a transformational leadership development institute for higher education professionals, founded to fill pipelines across the United States with dynamic leaders capable of ushering their respective institutions into a more inclusive and equitable future. HERS hosts three cohorts of the HERS Leadership Institute each year, including two summer intensive cohorts and a weekend immersion cohort hosted throughout the academic year. Read the press release about this year’s HERS Leadership Institute Cohort here.

Mohini Mukherjee started her career at Rutgers as an international graduate student and has worked in other areas of student affairs before beginning her work in international education more than 16 years ago. She has led the International Student Services unit for over a decade supporting international student success, well-being, and compliance. An advocate for students, Mukherjee is focused on ways to incorporate student voices and contributions in the university’s internationalization efforts. She is part of the core executive leadership team at Rutgers Global, contributing to various strategic projects, including leading the University’s India engagement initiatives.

Mukherjee holds a bachelor's degree in English from New Delhi's Lady Shri Ram College for Women, two master's degrees (in Human Resource Management and Women's Studies) and a PhD in Higher Education from Rutgers University.

She is honored to have been selected for the Institute and is looking forward to beginning the program. “I am truly grateful for the support I have received from Rutgers and am looking forward to the opportunity to learn from the Institute leaders and my peers about transformational leadership and how to best actualize my professional vision into my everyday work at Rutgers.”

The HERS Leadership Institute is an inclusive program, with a focus on women and people who are gender diverse (all HERS programs and services are open to all regardless of gender identity). The setting of the HLI replicates what could happen on campus if faculty, staff, and admins were all working together, allowing everyone to gain insight into the unique perspectives of each role and learn from one another. While challenging, HERS Leadership Institutes offer a non-competitive space, and participants build community with and champion the growth of other participants both during and beyond the program.

The 2023-2024 Weekend HERS Leadership Institute participants represent both public (two-thirds) and private (one-third) institutions, and a wide range of geographies and institutional missions. Participants represent 25 states across the United States and come from 52 unique institutions. The institutions are large and small; co-ed and single-gender; and include liberal arts, research, land-grant, faith-based institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as a non-profit foundation. The cohort comprises faculty, staff, and administrators from a rich array of disciplinary backgrounds.

Mohini Mukherjee is excited to participate in the HLI and notes, “I hope that the leadership competencies I gain through this experience will help me contribute in meaningful ways to the projects I am currently involved with and in my future endeavors at Rutgers.”
