To commemorate this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, presented by the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL), Rutgers Global and other campus partners present a film screening and discussion about the challenges facing the LGBT community in Uganda, including a government bill that threatens to make homosexuality punishable by death. The documentary, Call Me Kuchu (directed by Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright), tells the story of David Kato, Uganda's first openly gay man, and retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo as they work against the clock to defeat state-sanctioned homophobia while combating vicious persecution in their daily lives. The film narrates the brutal murder of Kato, an event that shakes the Ugandan LGBT movement to the core and sends shock waves around the world. Following the screening, Frank Mugisha (Executive Director of SMUG: Sexual Minorities Uganda) and Pamela Spees (Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights) will discuss the current climate for the LGBT community in Uganda.
