Born in Sri Lanka, Michael Ondaatje is one of Canada’s most recognizable voices. He began his career as a poet, publishing three volumes of verse, and though he has continued to write poetry, his work took a remarkable turn with his 1976 Coming Through Slaughter, a fictional portrait of a jazz musician in early 20th century New Orleans that is as much prose poem as it is a novel. Since then Ondaatje has become beloved by readers around the world for his dreamy, imagistic prose in novels such as The English Patient, which won the Booker Prize, and Anil’s Ghost. His work is remarkable for its music and emotional depth, and for his ability to grasp the sensuous, physical world. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of English and its Writers at Rutgers reading series.
