Counseling Services

Rutgers Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistant Program & Psychiatric Services (CAPS), part of the Division of Student Affairs, provides Community-Based Counseling, a program where CAPS counselors are placed within departments, schools, and cultural centers at various dates and times.

By embedding themselves in these spaces, counselors are able to build relationships, familiarity, comfort and trust with Rutgers students, faculty, and staff. Community-Based Counselors provide an initial connection to CAPS services, including support and therapy based on an individualized action plan, as well as referrals to other services. They also provide tailored workshops, group therapy, retreats, and presentations.

Community-Based Counselors offer free and confidential Let’s Talk drop-in sessions. These sessions typically last 20–30 minutes and give students an informal and open space to explore immediate problem solving and support. Let’s Talk is often the best fit for those students who:

  • Are not sure about counseling and wonder what it’s like to talk with a counselor
  • Are not interested in on-going counseling but would like to get a counselor’s perspective
  • Have a specific problem and would like someone with whom to talk it through

Rutgers Global and the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) host CAPS counselors and psychologists at our locations for Let’s Talk and individual counseling sessions.
