My experience studying abroad this past summer in Bologna, Italy, has been by far one of the most positive experiences in my life, as I adored the country, the culture, my peers, and the growth I felt within myself. This experience allowed me to grow and gain multiple skills and perspectives I hadn’t been able to apply before. As someone who has always struggled with stepping out of their comfort zone, being abroad was the push, I needed to adapt to new environments and go out of my way to form new friendships and experiences that will last a lifetime. I gained confidence, independence, and cultural awareness skills through my study abroad experience, realizing that if I could succeed and step out of my shell in a completely foreign place, I could do the same anywhere. Additionally, the students I met on my trip have become lifelong friends and people I’ve kept contact with, always laughing and reminiscing about times we knew we would only share. Being able to share the experiences of trying new foods, discovering new places, and learning the Italian culture and language with people of different backgrounds and cultures will always be memorable to me.
