International Faculty and Scholar Services
About
Rutgers Global's International Faculty & Scholar Services office strives to ease the transition of foreign nationals into the campus community. We conduct welcome orientations to incoming international visiting scholars and their dependents, as well as workshops to incoming international faculty members and staff. We provide resources, information, and programming on a wide range of family, work, cultural exchange, visa, and travel topics relevant to the international scholar population. During fall and spring semesters, we hold numerous trainings on hiring foreign nationals, visa processing, and academic appointments for department, institute and center administrators. Our office also engages in advocacy efforts to protect international educational exchange, prevent burdensome federal regulations, and clarify and improve related procedures.

Visa Programs and Sponsorships at Rutgers
Our mission is to provide quality advising services and to offer supportive programming to visiting scholars, faculty and staff in J-1, H-1B, O-1 and other employment-based visas during their time at the university. Learn more about Visa types, eligibility, and other helpful information.

J-1 Pre-Arrival Information
Coming to the United States requires some preparation, but it doesn’t need to be difficult. While your host department will help you coordinate health insurance, housing, and transportation needs, Rutgers Global will help to streamline your arrival and stay. Learn the steps you'll need to take to prepare to come to the United States and Rutgers in legal status.

Scholar Advising Services
Our staff are available to answer any questions that international faculty and scholars may have about their immigration status at Rutgers. International Faculty and Scholar Advisors are able to consult on questions relating to extensions, changes of status, maintenance of status, travel, scope of permissible activities, and other matters relating to employment-based sponsorship. We also partner with university departments as some questions may require further consultation with sponsoring departments.

Rutgers Sponsoring Departments
Rutgers recognizes the value of global perspectives in academia. International scholars come to Rutgers for a variety of reasons and through various channels. They may be hired by the university to teach or conduct research; other times, they are invited to come to Rutgers to conduct research or pursue other academic endeavors alongside Rutgers faculty.

Dependents and Family
Spouse and child(ren) under the age of 21 of the F-1 or J-1 visa holder are considered dependents. Dependents (spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age) can accompany international students to Rutgers and the United States during the duration of the student’s studies. Dependents of F-1 or J-1 status students will have to enter the US on F-2 or J-2 visas.

Rutgers STEM Research Sponsorship Program
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is pleased to announce its participation in the U.S. Department of State’s BridgeUSA J-1 Early Career STEM Research Initiative. This initiative was launched by the U.S. Department of State to further educational and cultural exchange in the U.S. through partnerships between private host organizations and U.S. universities. To support that mission, Rutgers now sponsors eligible early career researchers for J-1 visas who will conduct STEM research and engage in cultural exchange at suitable third-party STEM host organizations.
