Undergraduate students from South Korea visit Rutgers University for a short-term program on "AI & Biotechnology in Healthcare"

Rutgers Global, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), hosted a 2-day academic program for 26 undergraduate students from South Korea majoring in biotechnology, health sciences, computer science, and engineering. The program’s theme, “AI & Biotechnology in Healthcare,” highlighted how artificial intelligence is reshaping biomedical innovation and interdisciplinary research. Here are photos from the program.

On October 13, the group was welcomed by Ji-Yeung Jang, Assistant Vice President of Global Affairs. Next, students toured some key facilities on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus, including the Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine (IQB), the NMR Facility,  with a tour by Professor Seho Kim in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, the Super-resolution Microscopy Lab with a tour by Professor Sang-Hyuk Lee, and CryoEM Facility with a tour from Professor Jason Kaelber. The visits were interactive, with students observing equipment demonstrations, exploring advanced research technologies, and engaging directly with Rutgers faculty and researchers.

The afternoon session featured an academic lecture by Professor Sijian Wang on "AI in Drug Design." This was followed by a networking coffee hour with Rutgers students and alumni including Jaehyuk Jang (Ph.D. student in Statistics), Donghyun Lee (Ph.D. student in Statistics), Jihoon Kim (visiting Ph.D. student from Seoul National University, at Rutgers ECE), and Gary Lam (Rutgers ECE alumnus). It was a lively event with much conversation about research interests and career goals.

On October 14, students visited the Gormley Lab, led by Professor Adam Gormley from the Biomedical Engineering department, to learn about polymer-based drug delivery systems and biomedical device research. The program concluded with an industry engagement session featuring speakers including Dan Liu (Senior Principal Statistician, Bristol Myers Squibb), Angela Maeng (Senior Associate Scientist, Bristol Myers Squibb; Rutgers alumna), Jeea Choi (Project Leader, Sanofi), and Geoffrey Yoo (Senior Manager, AbbVie).

“We were thrilled to partner with IIE and KIAT and welcome this cohort of students to Rutgers,” said Jang. “Our ties with South Korea continue to grow and deepen, and we remain are committed to making strong connections between our Rutgers community and the world. Short-term programs like this one are an important way to grow these connections.”
