The Program

Spend your semester in the south of Spain!

Study in facilities that are state-of-the-art and similar to those found on a typical North American university campus.  This includes campus-wide Wifi access, sports facilities, green spaces, a gym, an elaborate library, and more! Students can take classes in Spanish language acquisition, politics, history, art, anthropology, cinema, literature, communication, psychology, and varying disciplines of science.  Choose courses in English and/or Spanish (with the appropriate language level).  Students will have a commute, but what a wonderful way to interact and become a local!

ISA Sevilla

Sevilla, Spain

Seville is the breathtaking capital and the largest city of Andalusia. It is a colorful and vibrant city with a lot of things to do and explore. It is the birthplace of Flamenco and has a long-standing legacy of bullfighting. The city boasts a rich blend of Christian, Moorish, and Jewish traditions, as evidenced in its beautiful monuments and architecture. Seville is home to the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, a temperate climate, vibrant neighborhoods, countless tapas bars, and boundless sunshine. Seville is a city for students because it’s big enough to give you a NYC/big city feel with a fun nightlife, but it also feels like a small town.  Life is slow enough to enjoy a coffee with a friend after work, people will say hi and bye, help out if you need directions, smile and really enjoy their city. There are always people of all ages mingling and walking.  Residents of all sorts use public transportation, as do many tourists from all over the world. It feels very safe and easy to enjoy. The cost of groceries, transportation, restaurants will feel very affordable for anyone used to NJ prices. The main train station in Seville (Santa Justa) is a 2.5 hour ride to Madrid by “bullet” train. Its old town also contains a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising three buildings: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral, and the General Archive of the Indies.

Academics

Founded in 1997 and located five miles outside of the city center, you will attend the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO), where the facilities are state-of-the-art and similar to those found on a typical North American university campus, complete with: campus-wide Wifi access, sports facilities, green spaces, a gym, an elaborate library, and more. (Note, students enrolled at the UPO will take the metro to and from class each day)

Courses are widely available in Spanish and English, giving you the opportunity to take classes through the Multidisciplinary Studies, Business & Spanish Language track in Spanish language acquisition, politics, history, art, anthropology, cinema, literature, communication, psychology, and varying disciplines of science. Your courses will be with other international students, and you will have the opportunity to meet locals throughout campus and on the commute to/from campus.  In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the ISA Seville's website.

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to ISA and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take approximately 12-15 credits while abroad. The credit translation system between ISA and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course through ISA will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript.  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.

Housing

Students will choose between an apartment or a student residence.

Apartments are a great housing option if you are seeking complete independence during your time abroad. Apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and availability is limited. Rent and utilities are included in the program price, and each apartment is fully furnished. Apartments, that are spread throughout the city, typically house three-five ISA students, with shared room occupancy. Meals and laundry service are not included.

Student Residence is a great choice if you would like to be independent while living with other international and local students. With availability limited on a first-come, first-served basis, you will room with another ISA student of the same gender. Single rooms may also be available for an additional fee. Meals and laundry service are not included, however there is a kitchen available for use as well as laundry facilities.

Depending on your housing placement, you will either be within walking distance to your university or conveniently located near public transit routes. Travel times to the various university buildings (with the exception of the UPO) generally range between 15 and 40 minutes depending on housing and class locations. With an open and adaptable mind, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.
