The Program

A program that will give your study abroad experience in Japan a feel of authenticity.

The University of Fukui is located in the city of Fukui, capital of Fukui Prefecture, on the Japan Sea coast of Japan.  Studying here provides the opportunity to experience the authentic, "hidden" Japan steeped in tradition, but with access to the bustling cities of Kyoto or Osaka in under two hours and Tokyo in three hours. The university itself is relatively small with a student body of about 5100. Small class sizes allow for a student friendly environment which encourages interaction with faculty. Rutgers students have been very successful in being hired as paid Interns at the City Hall, due to the history of exchange between Rutgers and Fukui dating back to 1870. Program Fact Sheet

Academics

Students may take classes offered in Japanese (for those with high level Japanese language skill) or English, as explained in the Program Fact Sheet 2023-24. Undergraduate students take Common Courses (Japanese language, Japanese affairs and traditional industries courses) in Japanese as well as Specialized Courses in English offered in the School of Education, School of Engineering, and School of Global and Community Studies in English.

See the following course catalog for course details.

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student to qualify for the University of Fukui - Rutgers Exchange Agreement. That means you will need to take the equivalent of at least 12 credits each semester. You should plan to take a minimum of 6 courses, meeting once a week, per semester at the University of Fukui.  You cannot take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.

Housing and Meals

The Bunkyo Campus has three student dormitories: Makishima House, UF Overseas Student House, and the UF Student Dormitory.

The Makishima House was renovated in 2019.  It is located right on-campus, so you can just walk to classes!

The UF Overseas Student House is 7mins walk to Bunkyo campus with a train station, & a grocery store nearby!

The UF Student Dormitory is operated by students. Both Japanese and International students live together, and you have a lot of opportunities to make Japanese friends!

Since the number of dormitory rooms is limited, there is no guarantee that a room will be provided for all exchange students.  You will be notified if you have been provided with a dormitory room when you receive a Letter of Acceptance (LoA).  For students who are not provided with a dormitory room, a UF officer will provide apartment information near campus and support you to secure a room before coming to Japan.

For more information, please check out the Bunkyo Campus Dormitory Guide.
