Previous trips have included overnight stays in Evora, a UNESCO world heritage site and lovely white-walled fortified city in the heart of the Alentejo region. There, students tour a working vineyard, learn about enotourism (wine tourism) in Portugal, and see how cork and olives are harvested, learning about the transformations in Portugal’s rural world that have come along with European integration.

On a trip to Coimbra and Porto, you might take a tour of Porto’s Casa da Musica, and tour the city with US expatriate and award-winning author Richard Zimler. While in Coimbra you will have a guided tour of one of the oldest universities in the world and its famous Joanina Library.

Student Highlights

Rachel Guerreiro

This summer I had the privilege of studying abroad in Portugal. As a student of Portuguese heritage, this was an especially rewarding experience and one that I will always cherish. In the study abroad program, I took the course Portuguese Literature in Translation where we learned about Portuguese history and culture through the words of some of its greatest writers. Each week, our class would visit sites around Lisbon and beyond that corresponded in some way to the curriculum that week. Like the medieval village of Sintra, which looks like it's out of a storybook. Or the secret underground ruins found beneath a bank in the heart of Lisbon, where we saw remnants of past civilizations, like an ancient Roman fish factory or an Islamic kiln. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and could not recommend it more highly to anyone looking to enrich their college experience.
