Program Location
Argentina
Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is the Argentine capital and the country's largest city, with 13 million inhabitants. In its cuisine as well as its architecture, the city is strongly influenced by Europe; it's sometimes referred to as the "Paris of South America." Buenos Aires has world-class opera (the Teatro Colón is the city's equivalent to the Met), museums, and of course Tango; you can catch a late-night show, or take a dance lesson. San Telmo, in the south of the city, is a lively neighborhood of cobbled streets, cafés, antique shops, churches, and other colonial-era buildings. As an immigrant country, Argentina is also a fascinating mix of cultures; in addition to Spanish, you might hear Italian, French, German or even Welsh being spoken by its diverse inhabitants.
Academics
In order to have an idea of what classes are available in the Liberal Arts track, you should visit the CIEE website. A minimum of 15 credits and four courses is required for every student. Upon arrival, all students take a Spanish language placement exam and, based on the results, are required to enroll in a certain number of credits in Spanish language and a certain number of direct enrollment courses.
The CIEE Study Center in Buenos Aires includes specialized courses in a variety of disciplines taught exclusively to CIEE study abroad students by experts in various academic fields. In addition, students are required to take direct enrollment courses within a wide array of academic departments at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), and Universitario Nacional de Arte (UNA). Given the recognized excellence of the faculty and the wide range of course offerings, the CIEE program is designed for motivated students with very strong language skills and a desire to immerse themselves in a dynamic cultural and academic experience. All courses are taught in Spanish.
In addition to not-for-credit volunteer opportunities, CIEE also offers a 3-credit seminar on Community Service and Volunteerism. The seminar provides the theoretical framework and specific tools needed to succeed in and make the most of volunteer opportunities.
You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to CIEE and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take at least 15 credits while abroad. The credit translation system between CIEE and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at CIEE will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript. You will receive 3-4 credits per class taken with CIEE. In some cases classes will only be worth 1-2 credits; however, this is rare and usually related to art and culture electives. It is not possible to take classes not-for-credit, nor is it possible to take classes as Pass/Fail (unless the course is an internship and you receive prior approval).
For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.
Housing and Meals
You will live in either a homestay or student residencia. In the homestay you will be provided with a single room and two meals per day. In the student residencia you will have a double shared room with ensuite bathroom. Students are paired with a native Spanish speaker and are expected to speak Spanish at all times. A common kitchen area and lounge are available in the residencia.
