Sevilla

Seville is the capital and largest city of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville.  Its old town contains a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising three buildings: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral, and the General Archive of the Indies.

Academics

Students will select one course from the list below. Each course is 3 credits and taught in English.

Andalusia through the Arts

Within a historical-cultural framework, this course introduces students to Andalusia and its people, and explores both artistic expression within Andalusia and Andalusia as a source of artistic inspiration.  Contributions of early civilizations to the formation of Andalusian culture will be explored in relation to the evolution of creative expression.  Students shall study various architectural masterpieces of Andalusia (the Alhambra of Granada, the Mezquita of Córdoba, and the Giralda and Real Alcázar of Seville), selections of literary works that reflect Andalusia and its cultural richness (poetry of Al-Andalus, Tales of the Alhambra, poetry of Antonio Machado, Bécquer and García Lorca, Don Juan Tenorio) and flamenco music and dance.

Cultures and Religions: Muslims, Jews, Christians in Southern Europe

This course will analyze the period of coexistence among the three religions and how this situation was crucial in the creation not only of the Medieval Kingdoms but also of the modern nation of Spain. Historic, artistic, politic, economic, religious, musical and even gastronomical parameters will be used for a better understanding of Al-Andalus from both a theoretical and daily life perspective. The course will also focus on the present situation to comprehend the multicultural complexity of Al-Andalus society.

Student testimonials

Heather in Sevilla

I would most definitely recommend that all students at Rutgers consider studying abroad whether it’s a whole semester or the short-term programs!

Madison Skibicki

Spain is a wonderful place, with kind people and a beautiful language – not to mention the yummy food! Sevilla is filled with beautiful architecture, and our class excursions to different locations, including flamenco dance lessons and paella cooking class, were unforgettable. I was also able to practice the elementary Spanish I have learned day to day and pick up on some phrases that are used only in Spain as well. I truly felt like a local! It is hard for me to pick one favorite memory from this experience, but I truly loved celebrating Spanish culture with my newfound friends; such as going to the ‘Three Kings Day’ parade. Here, candy was thrown out by children from humongous parade floats and then we went for tapas (or appetizers) to share with and chit chat. Truly, I could talk about this experience forever, and I would highly recommend studying abroad. If I could stay in Spain forever, I would – and this experience, in particular, makes me even more excited to travel. After all, there is so much of the world to see!

Ream Elkawaga

Read Ream's essay on ISA Journal . "[...]The casual weather despite the winter left me confidently strolling outside with no need for a bulky jacket. The sun coming up at 8 am didn’t phase me. I wasn’t so nervous about getting my groceries with my accented Spanish. It had become simply natural to talk to the rest of my study abroad group and we’d grown closer than I’d imagined. I no longer found Sevilla to be that far off place that I’d landed in. Instead, it was another place to call home, and though I’ve physically left it, I know it–and all the people I met there–will always hold a special place in my heart. ¡Te echo de menos, Sevilla!"
