Make the most of your winter break by studying global issues in English at a beachside university in Lima, with cultural activities that bring the city to life.
Spend your winter break diving into global studies at Universidad de Piura in Lima’s scenic Miraflores district—a coastal neighborhood known for its vibrant parks, seaside views, and walkable streets. With small, English-taught classes, you'll benefit from personalized instruction while exploring themes that span cultures and borders.

Lima
Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. Home to 10 million people, it overlooks the Pacific Ocean. You'll be able to explore and study the city's pre- and post- colonial history. Excursions offered in the past have included: Fortaleza del Real Felipe, Huaca Pucllana Pyramid, walking tours exploring the history and identity behind the graffiti art in Lima.
Academics
Rutgers is partnering with study abroad provider Worldstrides to bring this opportunity during winter break or J-term.
Students will take classes at Universidad de Piura (UDEP), known for its academic excellence, personalized support, and world-class Business School. Located in Lima’s vibrant Miraflores district, UDEP’s modern, open-air campus puts you within walking distance of cafés, seaside paths, and the cultural hub of Parque Kennedy—offering an ideal blend of academic focus and urban exploration. You'll select one 3-credit course taught in English.

Political, Economic & Social Reality of Latin America (3 US credits)
Housing and Meals
Housing will be organized by Worldstrides and included in the program cost. Students will share double rooms.
Students can choose between Homestays or apartments/student residences.
The apartments and student residences require a $300 security deposit, which is refundable at the end of the program unless there are costs incurred. Both have fully equipped kitchens. The key difference is that the student residences host other international students, while the apartments are exclusively for WorldStrides students. Students have private bedrooms in both options.
Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner daily. Students in apartments and residences prepare their own meals, dine at nearby restaurants/cafes, or order delivery. UDEP also has a cafeteria offering very affordable meals. The neighborhood around the university is full of food options, shops, pharmacies, and grocery stores- all within walking distance.
Lima is very affordable compared to the US. Meals range from $5-$10 USD depending on the venue. Ubers are a few dollars per ride, and busses are less than 50 cents, though most students prefer walking or using uber in the evenings.
Laundry is included once a week for homestay students. Residences have washing machines available. with students only needing to purchase detergent. Some apartments include washing machines, while others do not. But there are inexpensive laundromats close by, charging by the kilo.

Some of these expenses will be paid for prior to going abroad, such as an airline ticket, while some of these expenses, such as meals and personal expenses, will be paid in-country as part of your daily expenses. As you plan, you will need to budget these costs and spend wisely throughout your time abroad.
