Batumi

Batumi, Georgia is a seaside resort near the Turkish border, historically popular with Russian speaking vacationers, which is set apart by its unique cuisine, Californian climate, lush surrounding nature, and fascinating history. The city is dotted with tsarist, soviet, and modern architecture, making visible the layers of its history. The surrounding hills of Batumi, easily accessible via car or taxi, are surrounded with lush nature and ancient history. Academics

Rutgers is partnering with the study abroad provider SRAS to offer this program to our students. The course is organized by SRAS and the credits will be recognized as Rutgers credits.

Small, intensive Russian language classes aim to immerse you in the language for significant gains in your fluency, comprehension, and cultural knowledge, using a combination of classroom hours, peer tutoring (conversation partners), and other out-of-classroom experiences. Classes (run by Novamova, a highly respected modern language school) meet for 20 hours per week and focus on reading, writing, grammar, speaking, comprehension, and phonetics. The 8 week program is equivalent to 8 credits (up to two semesters) of language study at Rutgers; the 6 week program is equivalent to 6 credits (up to 1.5 semesters). All credits count toward the Russian major and Russian Language or Language & Literature minor tracks. A placement test, administered at Rutgers, will determine your level of study after your return. Housing and Meals

In Batumi you will stay with a host family, which includes two meals per day (breakfast and dinner). Homestays are 10-50 minutes away from classes by public transport. Homestays in Batumi vary, sometimes housing you with a family and sometimes with a single, older person. In all cases, however, your host(s) will be experienced and ready to include you in conversations and daily life—a phenomenal way to boost your Russian language and immerse yourself in the local culture.
