The Program

This program will explore the history and contemporary manifestations of what the Irish call “The Troubles”, a period of nearly forty years that cast the Irish people into waves of violence, atrocities, and hatred. The focus will be on learning about the contrasting versions of the era of violence, the final solution (known as the “Good Friday Agreement”), and the ongoing legacy and manifestations of the trauma, the destruction, the distrust, and the geopolitical consequences.

Academics

This is a 1 credit added experience to the Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar. There will be on-site lectures at Queen’s University Belfast, site-tours with leading experts, site-visits to centers focused on violence, trauma, and post-conflict resolution, and many conversations with the RU faculty as well as the Queen’s faculty. Students will be expected to keep a daily reflection journal on issues and ideas that arise from our visits and produce a short paper upon completion of the ten days, which will be integrated into their larger assignment for the IHT.

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed in the Ibis Budget Hotel and share a room with one other student. Breakfast will be included in the accommodation. All lunches will be the responsibility of the student. Five dinners (in a group setting) will be provided; students will be responsible for the remaining two while exploring the cities of Belfast and Dublin.

Semester Financial Aid

For Fall and Spring semester study abroad programs, your Rutgers financial aid award—including federal (Pell), state aid (TAG, EOF, etc.), direct loans, tuition remission, academic scholarships, and external third-party scholarships—can be applied toward your program. Parent PLUS loans and private loans may also be used to help cover remaining costs. Dr. J.D. Bowers

J.D. Bowers is the Dean of the Honors College and a Professor of History. He is also a member of the Executive Committee (and currently acting co-director) for the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers. He has taught genocide and post-atrocity justice focused courses for over twenty-five years and has taken nearly a hundred US-based students on previous study abroad programs, as well as having taught and lectured, extensively, abroad.
