The Program

The Rutgers-Camden Learning Abroad program is an alternative opportunity to a traditional semester or yearlong study abroad program.

Our emphasis is on integrating brief periods of travel with regularly offered courses in our university curriculum. Each year, the Learning Abroad program offers between twenty and twenty-five courses, working with academic departments and individual faculty members to extend the work of the classroom into a first-hand experience of cultural life outside the United States. The program is ideal for students who want international experience but for whom an extended period, such as a semester or year abroad, may not be feasible. The one-to-three-week travel component for fall courses typically occurs in January while the travel component for spring courses occurs during spring break or in May.

Visit our website for more information.

Various Locations

While new Learning Abroad courses are offered each year, some of our signature programs include “Health and Healing in Guatemala,” “Doing Business in South Africa,” and “Comparative Criminal Justice in the United Kingdom.” Recently, the Learning Abroad program has also offered courses with travel to destinations such as Cuba, Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Japan.

The Study Away program is a new initiative at Rutgers–Camden that provides students with the opportunity to enhance coursework through travel within the United States. The Study Away program has offered courses with travel to New Orleans, Alaska, Alabama, and Puerto Rico.

Academics

Undergraduate and graduate students participating in a Learning Abroad or Study Away program typically earn 3 credits for coursework and international travel. Current Rutgers University students must be registered for a Learning Abroad course to participate in the travel portion of the program. Students must attend scheduled class meetings and pre-departure orientations, complete all assignments, and follow the planned itinerary while abroad to successfully complete the course.
