The Program

By enrolling in this program, students will have the unique opportunity to learn from the various experts in tea plantation, production, processing and business management in the heart of the most important tea growing area in the world.

During this three-week, all-inclusive, 3-credit hands-on learning experience focused on the black tea supply chain and the essentials of the black tea industry -- from the field to the cup -- students will experience all cultural aspects of the host country and its people while learning about the production and management practices in the tea industry. Tea gardens and the tea garden communities are interwoven in the cultural life of Assam through both religious (e.g., Durga Puja) and non-religious festivals (e.g., Bihu) and music and dance (e.g. Jhumur). This summer study abroad course is brought to students in conjunction with the Department of Tea Husbandry & Technology (THT) and Assam Agricultural University (AAU). AAU is located in the outskirts of the city of Jorhat in the state of Assam in Northeast India. Assam accounts for about 50% of India's tea and about 17% of world tea production, thus AAU has access to some of the largest tea estates and small tea growers in the region, allowing students to visit commercial tea gardens, tea research laboratories and tea auction houses. Additionally, THT has its own experimental tea garden and factory where students will receive more hands-on experience.

Assam is a state in northeastern India known for its wildlife, archeological sites and tea plantations. In the west, Guwahati, Assam’s largest city, features silk bazaars and the hilltop Kamakhya Temple. Umananda Temple sits on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra river. The state capital, Dispur, is a suburb of Guwahati. The ancient pilgrimage site of Hajo and Madan Kamdev, the ruins of a temple complex, lie nearby. The marshlands of northern Kaziranga National Park harbor deer, elephants, and the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. On the northern border, Manas National Park is famed for its water buffalo, monkeys and tigers. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Orang National Park are also known for their one-horned rhinos. The northern city of Tezpur features Agnigarh Hill, a site steeped in Hindu mythology, with a landscaped garden. Farther east, Majuli Island is home to several Hindu monasteries called Vaishnavite Satras, and is popular for bird-watching. Northeast along the river, tea estates offer tours near the city of Dibrugarh. The state of Assam is the world's largest tea-growing region, lying on either side of the Brahmaputra River, and bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar.

This course will satisfy as an elective for all Rutgers students or as an 'experience-based' education credit for SEBS students, particularly for the following programs: Food and Business economics (11:373) and Food Science (11:400). 

By the end of this program, students will have learned about (1) how tea is grown -- from raising seedlings, field preparation to various cultivation practices of the tea crop in the field, including organic tea; (2) how tea is harvested and processed -- the practices and techniques of harvesting the tea crop and manufacturing processes for black tea, including the chemistry behind the processing of black tea, tasting (sensory evaluation) of tea for product differentiation and pricing; (3) business and marketing management -- the economics of tea, factors determining the quality and price of tea, packaging, storage, transportation; regulations in the black tea industry, how large commercial tea estates are organized and managed, managing small tea gardens, and various modes of team marketing including auction houses; and (4) contributions of the tea sector to the socio-cultural-historical identity of Assam. 

While this course is ideal for students interested in working in the tea industry, no prior knowledge of black tea is required to enroll in the course.

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed at the Assam Agricultural University (AAU). All meals, housing, and transportation is included in the price of the program.

Some of these expenses will be paid for prior to going abroad, such as an airline ticket, while some of these expenses, such as meals and local transportation, will be paid in-country as part of your daily expenses. As you plan, you will need to budget these costs and spend wisely throughout your time abroad.
