The ROSE Program - Shanghai

The Rutgers Overseas Semester Experience (ROSE) program offers Chinese students the opportunity to experience their first or second semester as a Rutgers student at a partner university campus in China. Participating in the ROSE Shanghai program will help students navigate their first and second semester at Rutgers while preparing for the eventual transition to campus in New Jersey.

By partnering with a non-profit organization, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), Rutgers has created an opportunity for first year Chinese international students to study in Shanghai in partnership with East China Normal University (ECNU), one of the most prestigious and Class A Double First Universities in Shanghai. First and Second semester students will have the option to take two to three on-campus Rutgers approved courses from courses offered, in addition to Rutgers online coursework after consulting with your first year dean or advisor.

Campus Location & Access

Shanghai-ROSE

Shanghai

Due to Shanghai Municipal Government regulations, and in conjunction with ECNU leadership policies, the Rutgers-ECNU (CIEE) program teaching site will be located at the Baoshan teaching facilities designed for this program, and not on any ECNU campus. The location is near a public transportation stop, which provides convenient transportation to downtown location for Rutgers students. Students will be able to live in close proximity to the Baoshan classroom facilities to attend classes.

Campus access: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students will not have any access to ECNU campus or facilities besides the Baoshan teaching facility. The facilities include classrooms, study areas, and an area where students can bring food. Additionally, Rutgers will provide access to additional facilities such as sport venues, mental health counseling, and other facilities. Students will also have regularly planned activities that can be taken part of to enhance the Rutgers experience.

Academics

ROSE will consist of a combination of in-person classes at this leading Chinese university campus taught by Chinese partner professors and online coursework taught by Rutgers professors. The ROSE program will allow students to interact with classmates in China, New Jersey and around the world to create a cohesive Rutgers community. For in-person classes, student will take Rutgers approved courses that will either be the same or equivalent materials and courses as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey. Online classes will be the same materials and syllabi as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey.

Semester:

ROSE In-person courses: will start according to partners calendar of February 27th through around June 12th (tentative). Students will need to arrive at their ROSE location on February 27 for check-in and move in.

Rutgers Online classes: will be according to the Rutgers spring semester calendar of January 19th through May 12th. Online classes will start before in person classes, and will not require students to attend ROSE facilities until the start of in-person courses.

With a combination in online and in-person courses, the semester will start January 19th until around June 12th.

Online Rutgers courses: Students will work with their Rutgers first-year dean or school advisor to determine which online classes offered by Rutgers will be required for students to take in addition to the on campus courses.

On-campus Rutgers courses: An estimated eight Rutgers and partner courses course will be taught by partner and faculty from high ranking universities at ECNU Baoshan teaching facility classrooms. Students will work with their Rutgers advisors to determine which of the classes to take.

Below is a tentative course list of potential courses that may be offered at ROSE Shanghai. The final list will only offer around eight of these courses:*

TBD  Intro to Entrepreneurship  3 credits
TBD  Intro to Financial Accounting  3 credits
01:640:151 Calculus I for Math and Physics 4 credits
01:640:152  Calculus II for Math and Physics  4 credits
01:960:285  Intro to Statistics for Business  3 credits
01:198:112  Computer Science Data Structure  4 credits
01:160:160  General Chemistry for Engineering  3 credits

(GI) ENV 2004*  Nature and Culture in Transnational Perspective  3 credits
(GI) COMM 3301*  Intercultural Communication and Leadership  3 credits

*The last four courses are partner courses that will count as Rutgers credits.

You will need to ensure that you are registered as a full time student according to Rutgers University requirements. This means a course load of 12-18 credits during the spring 2021 semester with a combination of both online and on-campus courses. You will receive 2-4 credits per class taken with the ROSE program, depending on course selection.

* The final course offering will vary slightly due to final student enrollment. The current course listed are preliminary courses that may be offered.

Housing and Meals

Rutgers students can select between housing options that include ROSE off campus housing or commuting from home. For more information on pricing, see the financial section below.

1. Campus Housing For ROSE housing, students will have the option to stay at international dormitory nearby Baoshan teaching facilities. Dorms will include either single or double occupancy rooms with private bathroom and showers, and have access to laundry services, a gym, and study areas. Double housing is limited in quantity and only available on a first come-first serve basis. Through ROSE housing, Rutgers students will have a similar experience to living on-campus in New Jersey. Students in ROSE housing will need to follow guidelines and policies regarding living in the hotel throughout the semester and needing to check-in nightly with RAs due to COVID-19 safety policies.

The off campus hotel (different than ROSE Fall) is tentatively planned for Atour Light Hotel (上海宝山长江路亚朵轻居酒店) located at 500 Changjiang Rd, around 2km away from the Baoshan Teaching Facilities. If any changes, we will let students know.

2. Commute - Students have the choice to waive ROSE housing and commute to the Baoshan location from home. Students can live near the main campus and commute if willing. If a student originally decides to commute before the start of the semester and later prefers campus housing, we will not be able to guarantee availability. If available, housing prices may increase based on partner costs. Students who commute will still be bound by original commuter agreement provided to all students that states students are responsible for any financial risks due to any change or cancellation.

Note: Students will be required to pay a security deposit directly to the hotel at check-in in addition to the cost of housing. This is generally a refundable fee upon proper check-out of the space following the end of the semester.

Meals: Meals are not included in this housing option and are the responsibility of the student.

Internet: ROSE housing and classrooms are equipped with internet connection.

Rutgers Resources: Students will still be able to access and receive many of the resources available to students in New Jersey including online library access, student services, virtual programming, and other services.

EXCURSION AND ACTIVITIES

Optional program excursions and activities will be available to Rutgers students throughout the semester. Specifics will be given at a later date for students with final placements in the  Rutgers-ECNU (CIEE) program.

DEPOSITS, WITHDRAWAL, AND DISCLAIMER

Program Fee Deposit: A $3,500 deposit will be due once your final location has been approved to secure a spot in the ROSE program at this location. The deposit will be applied against your term bill. All deposits are due between November 13, 2020 and November 20, 2020. Deposits are non-refundable on/after January 19.

Housing Deposit: By selecting ROSE housing, a deposit in the amount of $1,500 will be required to secure the room. Upon receipt of your deposit, your placement for housing will be determined. The deposit will be due November 13, 2020 and November 20, 2020. The housing deposit will become non-refundable after December 21, 2020.

Withdrawal: The Rutgers-ECNU (CIEE) ROSE program option is one of several options available to Rutgers first year undergraduates. Students maintain the ability to revert to a fully-online course of study before the start of classes on January 19, 2021. After the online drop/add date, students are not able to drop from in-person ROSE courses for fully online courses.

Disclaimer: The Rutgers-ECNU (CIEE) program option is contingent upon the normal operating status of our partner university as well as government and health regulations. The program may be cancelled or amended at any time if deemed necessary for student’s health and safety. In such a scenario, students may have the option of transferring to another location if spacing is available, or they may automatically revert to a fully-online first semester course option. Rutgers reserves the right to change the program as necessary, including location, facilities, and services if needed. In such a case, Rutgers will send out notifications.
