The ROSE Program - Shanghai

The Rutgers Overseas Semester Experience (ROSE) program offers Chinese students the opportunity to experience their first semester as a Rutgers student at a partner university campus in China. The on-campus locations include Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Participating in the ROSE program will help students navigate their first semester at Rutgers while preparing for the eventual transition to campus in New Jersey.

By partnering with a non-profit organization, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), Rutgers has created an opportunity for first year Chinese international students to study at East China Normal University (ECNU), one of the most prestigious and Class A Double First Universities in Shanghai.

Rutgers students would have the option to select two on-campus Rutgers courses from seven offered in addition to Rutgers online coursework in consultation with your Rutgers first year dean or advisor.

Campus Location & Access

Shanghai-ROSE

Shanghai

Due to Shanghai Municipal Government regulations, and in conjunction with ECNU leadership policies, the Rutgers-ECNU (CIEE) program will be located to ECNU’s Baoshan campus. This change is out of best safeguarding student’s health with social distancing while minimizing the risk of covid-19. The campus is located near public transportation stops,  a convenient location for Rutgers students. Students will be able to live near and attend classes on campus as long as the campus is operating at a normal status for Fall 2020.

Campus access: The degree of campus access will depend on East China Normal University campus’ fall operation status. If East China Normal University campus is open and running at normal capacity, students in the Rutgers ROSE program assigned to ECNU will be issued a student identification card that will give them access to the campus, as well as most university resources such as the library, dining halls, gym, etc.

Academics

The ROSE program will consist of a combination of in-person classes at a leading Chinese university campus taught by Chinese partner professors and online coursework taught by Rutgers professors. ROSE will allow students to interact with classmates in China, New Jersey and around the world to creating a stronger Rutgers community. With both in-person and online classes, students will access the same materials and syllabi being used on the Rutgers campus in New Jersey.

Online Rutgers courses: Students will work with their Rutgers first-year dean or school advisor to determine which online classes offered will be required in addition to the on-campus courses.

On-campus Rutgers courses: An estimated six (6) Rutgers courses and one (1) recitation course will be taught by CIEE faculty in ECNU classrooms. Students would work with their Rutgers school advisor to determine which courses of the seven classes to take. Below is a tentative course list that will be offered on ECNU campus*:

MATH 135  Calculus I for Life & Social Sciences  4 credits
MATH 151  Calculus I for Math & Physical Sciences  4 credits
MATH 152  Calculus II for Math & Physical Sciences  4 credits
CS 111  Intro to Computer Science  4 credits
CHEM 159  General Chemistry for Engineers  3 credits
PHYS 203  General Physics  3 credits
BUS 100  Introduction to Business  (RBS taught)  3 Credits
ECON 102  Intro to Micro Economics (Onsite Recitation Sections)  3 credits

1. Campus Housing - For ROSE housing, students will stay at nearby international dormitories  and very few on-campus dormitories depending on capacity. Dormitories will be within a 5-10 minute walking range to campus and classrooms. Dorms will include either single or double occupancy rooms with private bathroom and showers, and have access to laundry services, a gym, and study areas. Through ROSE housing, Rutgers students will have a similar experience to living on-campus in New Jersey. Prices are listed below. Students who do not sign up or pay before the July 6 deadline are subject to higher prices for housing.

2. Commute - Students have the choice to waive ROSE housing and commute to campus from home. If a student originally decides to commute before the start of the semester and later prefers campus housing, we will not be able to guarantee availability. If available, housing prices may increase based on partner costs.

Meals: Meals are not included in this housing option and are the responsibility of the student. Three meals a day are available in the campus cafeterias for a moderate price for around $20 a day.
