The ROSE Program - Guangzhou

The Rutgers Overseas Semester Experience (ROSE) program offers Chinese students the opportunity to experience their second semester as a Rutgers student at a partner university campus in China. The on-campus locations include Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Participating in the ROSE program will help students navigate their second semester at Rutgers while preparing for the eventual transition to campus in New Jersey.

By partnering with our long-term esteemed partner, South China University of Technology (SCUT), a Class A Double First university, and ranked 46th in the world for engineering, Rutgers has created an opportunity for first-year, Chinese international students to study at one of China’s most prestigious universities in the south. SCUT focuses on engineering, combined with science, and promotes the well-coordinated development of management, economics, humanities, and law. Students will have the option to take two to three on-campus Rutgers approved courses from courses offered, in addition to Rutgers online coursework after consulting with your first year dean or advisor.

Campus Location & Access

Guangzhou

The Rutgers-SCUT ROSE program will be located at SCUT’s campus in Guangzhou’s Higher Education Mega Center in the Panyu district. This Higher Education Mega Center is an island comprised of many schools located in one convenient location. Students will be able to live and attend classes on campus as long as the campus is operating at a normal status for the Spring 2021 semester. The campus may also be relocated to an alternate SCUT campus if required.

Campus access: The degree of campus access will depend on SCUTS’s Spring 2021 operating status. If SCUT is open and running at normal capacity, students in the Rutgers-SCUT ROSE program will be issued a student ID card that will give them access to the campus, as well as most university resources such as the library, dining halls, campus health center, and sporting complexes.

Academics

ROSE will consist of a combination of in-person classes at this leading Chinese university campus taught by Chinese partner professors and online coursework taught by Rutgers professors. The ROSE program will allow students to interact with classmates in China, New Jersey and around the world to create a cohesive Rutgers community. For in-person classes, student will take Rutgers approved courses that will either be the same or equivalent materials and courses as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey. Online classes will be the same materials and syllabi as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey.

Semester:

ROSE In-person courses: will start according to partners calendar of February 27th through around June 12th (tentative). Students will need to arrive at their ROSE location on February 27 for check-in and move in.

Rutgers Online classes: will be according to the Rutgers spring semester calendar of January 19th through May 12th. Online classes will start before in person classes, and will not require students to attend ROSE facilities until the start of in-person courses.

With a combination in online and in-person courses, the semester will start January 19th until around June 12th.

Online Rutgers courses: Students will work with their Rutgers first-year dean or school advisor to determine which online classes offered by Rutgers will be required for students to take in addition to the in-person courses.

In-person Rutgers courses: An estimated six to seven) Rutgers and partner courses will be taught by SCUT and local faculty (like South China Agriculture) faculty in SCUT classrooms. Students would work with their school advisors to determine which of the courses to take. Below is a tentative course offering for the SCUT campus*:

01:640:152  Calculus II for Math and Physics  4 credits
01:198:112  Data Structure (tentative)  4 credits
01:960:285  Intro to Statistics for Business  3 credits
01:160:160  Gen Chemistry for Engineering  3 credits
01:750:124  Analytical Physics  2 credits
TBA  SCUT/RU Core Course (tentative)  TBA
TBA  SCUT/RU Corse Course (tentative)  TBA

*The SCUT/RU course(s) will be partner courses that will count as Rutgers credits. .

You will need to ensure that you are registered as a full time student according to Rutgers University requirements. This equates to a course load of 12-18 credits during the spring 2021 semester through a combination of both online and on-campus courses. Depending on course selection, you will receive 2-4 credits per class taken.

** The final course offering might vary due to final student enrollment. The current course listed are preliminary courses that may be offered.

Housing and Meals

Rutgers students can select between housing options that include ROSE on campus housing or commuting. For more information on pricing, see the financial section below.

1. On-Campus Hotel - For ROSE housing, students will stay at on-campus or at nearby hotels depending on capacity. Hotels will be on or in close proximity to campus, will include either single or double occupancy rooms with private bathroom and showers, as well as access to dining. Through ROSE housing, Rutgers students will have a similar experience to that of students living on-campus in New Jersey. Due to covid-19 prevention policies, students are strongly recommended to live in ROSE housing. Students in ROSE housing will need to follow guidelines and policies regarding living in the hotel throughout the semester and needing to check-in nightly with RAs due to COVID-19 safety policies.

The off campus hotel is currently planned for College City SCUT Hotel (华工大学城中心酒店) located at 86 Huagong North Rd.

2. Commute - Due to covid-19 policies implemented at SCUT, it is strongly recommended that all students live at the on-campus hotel option. Students have the choice to waive ROSE housing and commute to campus if they are living with family nearby. Students who commute may not have complete access to the SCUT campus. In addition, enhanced safety measures will be required each time needing to enter the campus.

Should a student who originally decides to commute from home before the start of the semester, later prefer campus housing, we will not be able to guarantee availability. Should housing be available, prices may increase based on current partner costs. Students who commute will need to abide by any and all regulations and restrictions for campus access.

Note: Students will be required to pay a security deposit directly to the hotel at check-in in addition to the cost of housing. This is generally a refundable fee upon proper check-out of the space following the end of the semester.

Meals: Meals are not included in the housing option and are the responsibility of the student. Three meals a day are available in the campus cafeterias for a moderate price.

Internet: ROSE housing and classrooms are equipped with internet connection.

Rutgers Resources: Students will still be able to access and receive many of the resources available to students in New Jersey including online library access, student services, on-line programming, and other services.

After the online drop/add date, students are not able to drop from in-person ROSE courses for fully online courses.

Disclaimer: The Rutgers-SCUT ROSE program option is contingent upon the normal operating status of our university partner as well as government and health regulations.
