The ROSE Program - Beijing

The Rutgers Overseas Semester Experience (ROSE) program offers Chinese students the opportunity to experience their second semester as a Rutgers student at a partner university campus in China. The on-campus locations include Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Participating in the ROSE program will help students navigate their second semester at Rutgers while preparing for the eventual transition to campus in New Jersey.

By partnering with the world renown Guanghua School of Management at Peking University (a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese Universities), Rutgers has created an opportunity for first-year, Chinese international students to study at the most prestigious higher education institution in China, regarded as a leader among business schools in China. Students will have the option to take two to three on-campus Rutgers approved courses from courses offered, in addition to Rutgers online coursework after consulting with your first-year dean or advisor.

Students who are placed at Guanghua School of Management will be required to understand and agree to the requirements for course options and campus access. While ROSE housing will be offered to create a more cohesive Rutgers community, housing will be located off campus, approximately 3km away from the classroom. Access to the general PKU campus will not be allowed and is dependent to change depending on the operating status of the university campus in the wake of COVID-19.

Beijing

The Rutgers-Guanghua School of Management at Peking University (PKU) ROSE program will be located at Peking University’s Guanghua Dayuan classroom building (off campus). Although the classrooms are not located on campus, they are within walking distance of the ROSE program housing option.

Campus access: The degree of campus access will depend on Peking University’s Spring operation status. By default, access to PKU’s campus will NOT be available to students. Pending changes to operating status, further updates will be given during the semester. Although there will not be campus access, students will still have access to alternative facilities including sporting facilities, mental health counseling, self-study area, and other facilities. Students will also have regularly planned activities that can be taken part of to enhance the Rutgers experience.

Academics

ROSE will consist of a combination of in-person classes at this leading Chinese university campus taught by Chinese partner professors and online coursework taught by Rutgers professors. The ROSE program will allow students to interact with classmates in China, New Jersey and around the world to create a cohesive Rutgers community. For in-person classes, student will take Rutgers approved courses that will either be the same or equivalent materials and courses as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey. Online classes will be the same materials and syllabi as the Rutgers campuses in New Jersey.

Semester:

ROSE In-person courses: will start according to partners calendar of February 27th through around June 12th (both dates are tentative and may slightly adjust if required, confirmation will be sent out at a date in the near future). Students will need to arrive at their ROSE location on February 27 for check-in and move in.

Rutgers Online classes: will be according to the Rutgers spring semester calendar of January 19th through May 12th. Online classes will start before in person classes, and will not require students to attend ROSE facilities until the start of in-person courses.

With a combination in online and in-person courses, the semester will start January 19th until around June 12th.

Online Rutgers courses: Students will work with their Rutgers first-year dean or school advisor to determine which online classes offered by Rutgers will be required for students to take in addition to the on campus courses.

In-person Rutgers courses: An estimated four Rutgers and partner courses will be taught by Peking University and Rutgers faculty in off campus classrooms. Students would work with their school advisors to determine which courses to take. Below is a tentative course list that will be offered*:

01:960:285  Intro to Statistics for Business  3 credits

 33:382:302

 OR

 33:010:272

Intro to Entrepreneurship (pre-requisite: EAD II

 OR

 Intro to Financial Accounting

 3 credits
PKU/RU Humanities Core Course I (tentative)  credits
PKU/RU Humanities Core Course II (tentative)  credits

*The PKU/RU course(s) will be partner courses that will count as Rutgers credits.

You will need to ensure that you are registered as a full time student according to Rutgers University requirements. This means a course load of 12-18 credits during the spring 2021 semester with a combination of both online and on-campus courses. You will receive 2-4 credits per class taken with the ROSE program, depending on course selection.

* The final course offering might vary slightly due to final student enrollment. The current course listed are preliminary courses that may be offered.

Housing and Meals

Rutgers students can select between housing options that include ROSE off campus housing or commuting from home. For more information on pricing, see the financial section below.

1. Off-Campus Hotel - For ROSE housing, students will stay at off-campus hotels that are approximately 3km away from the classrooms. Hotels will include either single or double occupancy rooms with private bathroom and showers, as well as access to laundry, shared kitchen, gyms and dining. Through ROSE housing, Rutgers students will experience a similar living community to that on-campus in New Jersey. Students in ROSE housing will need to follow guidelines and policies regarding living in the hotel throughout the semester and needing to check-in nightly with RAs due to COVID-19 safety policies.

The off campus hotel is currently planned for Ariva Beijing West Hotel located at Haidian South Road. Due to feedback from the fall semester, the rooming option will be upgraded to loft rooms that will include areas for students to have a more conducive student environment with a study area.

2. Commuting - Students have the choice to waive ROSE housing. If a student initially decides to commute before the start of the semester and later prefers hotel housing, Rutgers will not be able to guarantee availability. If space is available, housing prices may increase based on partner costs at that time

Note: Students will be required to pay a security deposit directly to the hotel at check-in in addition to the cost of housing. This is generally a refundable fee upon proper check-out of the space following the end of the semester.

Meals: Breakfast is included in this housing option, lunch and dinner are the responsibility of the student.

Internet: ROSE hotel rooms and classrooms are equipped with internet connection.

Rutgers Resources: Students will still be able to access and receive many of the resources available to students in New Jersey including online library access, student services, on-line programming, and other services.

The program may be cancelled or amended at any time if deemed necessary for student’s health and safety. In such a scenario, students may have the option of transferring to another location if spacing is available, or they may automatically revert to a fully-online first semester course option. Rutgers reserves the right to change the program as necessary, including location, facilities, and services if needed. In such a case, Rutgers will send out notifications.
