Rutgers was one of 12 universities selected in 2015 to participate in the IIE IAPP Cuba program and subsequently convened an ad hoc faculty group in 2015 to discuss academic collaboration with Cuban institutions, chaired by history professor Kathleen Lopez.
The university has collaborated with Cuban counterparts since the 1990s and the diplomatic thaw between the United States and Cuba in 2014 has helped to open up relations even further. In October 2015, Rutgers participated in the first university tour in Cuba and in the following fall, Rutgers–Camden hosted Sustainable Communities: What We Can Learn from a Changing Cuba, and signed a universitywide MOU with the University of Havana. One of the current Rutgers programs available to students is the public health service-learning abroad program to Havana and the Rutgers–Camden Community Leadership Center led a Learning Abroad program and delegation to the country in spring 2017.
