International Academic Partnership Program

In 2011, the Institute of International Education (IIE) selected Rutgers University to participate in its International Academic Partnership Programs (IAPP) for Brazil and India. IIE’s Center for International Partnerships in Higher Education manages the International Academic Partnership Program. It was established in 2009 with an initial two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). In awarding the grant, FIPSE intended to help jumpstart an academic partnership program in higher education between the U.S. and other countries that would grow into a self-sustaining program. The IAPP will provide Rutgers and other U.S. institutions with guidance in strategic planning specific to developing partnerships in either Brazil or India. Each institution involved in the IAPP makes a commitment to form a campus-wide task force specific to each country to work on prospective partnerships, conduct an institution-wide inventory of activities pertaining to a given country (in Rutgers case Brazil and India), and develop a strategic plan focused on partnerships with that country. Each university or college will also work with a mentor from the IAPP Advisory Board who can offer high-level input on its partnership strategy. 

Rutgers' involvement in IAPP-India and IAPP-Brazil will deepen its existing relationships with institutions in those two countries and will enable Rutgers to form new partnerships with a variety of institutions of higher education, from major universities to colleges and institutes. The selection of these new partnerships will be guided by Rutgers faculty and staff with specific research, teaching interests, projects, or programs in either country. It is hoped that the new partnerships will be mutually beneficial to Rutgers and partner institutions abroad and will foster new programs in study abroad, student and faculty exchanges, collaborative research and teaching, curriculum development, and dual degree programs.
